Stretch Series Stretch series developed directly from Massage series. Using just the ‘massaged’ vertical walls of large vessels, cut and pulled/stretched open they become dishes. The inside now becomes the outside; the secret invisible marks of the hand are revealed and become the exposed surface. An increasing interest in ‘reading’ the marks of the hand guides this exploration. When I was an apprentice in a busy pottery in Japan I learnt to ‘read’ the maker’s marks in the pots, the small unconscious nuances and differences of touch; one clean and sharp, another loose and relaxed. Each revealed a different potter’s personality. This type of ‘reading’ can become the basis for a lifetime of collecting one potter’s work.
